The Rawalpindi born allrounder made his first-class debut against Peshawar in October 2004 but failed to impress with bat or ball. However, in their second match against Multan, Sohail Tanvir scored an unbeaten 97, having three windows, but has only played 17 games from first class (a total of 19 in three seasons).
Tanvir has established itself as a versatile bike and hitting his unbeaten 124 (his second century of first class) in 2007 pentangular Cup match against Sind further established that point. He also represented Pakistan Academy on their tour of Bangladesh and its good performance and complete the tour against Australia A in the ODI series at home made the selectors to name him as the replacement Shoaib Akhtar in the inaugural World ICC Twenty20. The decision was a surprise, however, as Tanvir had not taken a wicket in the ten games he had played Twenty20.

His action badly, however, caused a lot of trouble batsmen and has emerged as the big surprise in the ICC World Twenty20. Although not picked up by the test team, Tanvir was back in the colors of Pakistan in ODI series against South Africa. He recorded an impressive 6 of 14 of Rajasthan in the IPL - the best figures in a Twenty20.He also bowls occasional arm orthodox spin left, as demonstrated in his second career Test, against India in Calcutta.
